I designed a book that used the vengeful, punk-rock tone of DIIV's 2019 song, "Blankenship," to draw out the darker subtext of astronomer Carl Sagan's 1985 speech to Congress. Sagan urges that if we don't act on reducing greenhouse gases now, we put future generations at risk, but in "Blankenship," DIIV argues that capitalistic greed has already destroyed the planet.
I combined analog mark-making, collage, and hand-lettering to place this book in a context of handmade punk zines, and a compact yet dynamic form of binding to allude to CD booklets or similar types of music packaging. The two booklets are read side-by-side, and though they seem distinct at first, the warming color palette and gradual intertwining of texts shows how these two perspectives are very much in line with each other, and right now, it is dire that we listen.
